King Philip II of Spain was born on May 21, 1527 and died on September 13, 1598. He was succeeded to the throne of Spain in January of 1556. He had four wives and two of them were Princesses. His wives names were Princess Maria of Portugal, Queen Mary I of England, Princess Elizabeth of Valois, and Anne of Austria. Philip was an absolute ruler. He believed that God had made him king and also believed in the divine rights of kings. One quote said by King Philip II was "God, who has given me so many kingdoms to govern, has not given me a son fit to govern them." This shows how Philip knew God had made him ruler of his kingdoms but he complains that God has not come through with his wish to have a son. Philip II replaced his father as King of Spain. Philip II hoped to a make an impact on the decades as King of Spain. He was Lord of the Seventeen Provinces from 1556 until 1581, holding various titles for the individual territories such as Duke or Count. King Philip inherited Spain, the Spanish Netherlands, and the American colonies. In 1580, Philip inherited Portugal because the Portugal king had died and did not have an heir. He helped the common people by giving them wealth. During his reign, towns were being put together in the Americas, and all the wealth was sent to Spain. He put together the largest armada of ships. There were over 130 ships in his fleet.
